Gordon McAndrew

Gordon was born on 29th August 1929 at the Bowmans, near Aldivalloch. He spent the first sixteen years of his life in the Cabrach with his mother Isabella on the family croft. He began his schooling at the Upper Cabrach School in 1933, one of thirty three pupils at the school. Gordon later went on to secondary school at Dufftown, where he was a weekly boarder.

In 1945 at the age of sixteen, Gordon joined the Royal Air Force as an apprentice aircraft engineer. During his time at RAF Halton Gordon met his wife-to-be, Florence. When he left the Royal Air Force in October 1957, Gordon and Florence set up life in Tring in Hertfordshire, England and had three children together, Heather, Brian and Moira. Gordon and Florence went on to run their family newsagents for many years. Gordon also enjoyed politics and became an independent councillor. He supported many community projects including the establishment of local youth and sport clubs.

The Cabrach remained a very important part of Gordon’s life. Gordon and his family would often visit Isabella and her husband, Charlie at Bridgend where she ran the post office. In later years, Gordon returned to the Cabrach two or three times annually and always attended the Upper Cabrach church service until 2022.

Gordon passed away on 26th September 2024 aged ninety five.

The family have requested that any donation friends and family would like to make in memory of Gordon be donated to the Cabrach Trust in support of their charitable community regeneration aims.
