The Grouse Inn

Gaelic – All-a bhealaich

Formerly known as The Richmond Hotel and locally known as ‘the Airdwell’

The Grouse Inn has had several names. It has been known locally as the ‘Airdwell’ but in the 1800s it was also known ‘Da Watt’s’ or ‘Johnnie Watts’. The original building was a merchant’s shop run by a man named Patrick Gordon. Patrick was one of the young Cabrach men who joined the Gordon Highlanders after the regiment was raised by the Duchess of Gordon in 1794.

The building first became an inn around 1805 and was run by Adam McCombie from Ardwell. By the mid 1800s The Grouse Inn had become a popular fishing retreat under proprietor William Stewart. It was well known among a circle of fishers who returned every year to fish the Rivers Deveron and Blackwater. The Duke of Gordon’s guests stayed here before the Upper Cabrach shooting lodge was built and the inn’s name was changed to The Richmond Arms.

The Grouse Inn

In 1876, the Watt family took over and combined farming with innkeeping. Three generations of the Watt family ran the inn between 1876 and 1938. William Watt apparently stood over six feet tall and was nicknamed ‘Da Watts’. His son John took over in 1912 when William died aged eighty-five. John’s widow and their son later carried on the business. In the summer of 1938, Archibald McBain from Rothiemurchus took over reinstated the name back to The Grouse Inn. His daughter-in-law Wilma McBain and her daughter Mhairi still own and live at The Grouse Inn.

Brian MacAndrew

Brian McAndrew remembers Ian McBain, proprietor and landlord of the Grouse Inn. Brian spent his summer holidays in the Cabrach grouse beating on the Cabrach Estate. He recollects the times spent tramping across the Cabrach moors and the sometimes lively social evenings at the Grouse Inn.
