The Mystery of Inverharroch Castle
A castle at Inverharroch is mentioned across historical records of the Cabrach. King Edward I supposedly stayed here on his march through the north of Scotland in 1296. Robert Bruce, King David I and King James IIare all said to have rested here. But we have no proof about an actual castle. A map from 1636 shows a settlement or manor of some kind at Inverharroch. A building is recorded there in 1725 but by the late 1700s it is described as little more than ‘a visible ruin’. Recent research suggests that there was possibly never a castle at Inverharroch, certainly nothing like other defensive castles such as Balvenie or Auchindoun. Perhaps the ‘castle’ was a hunting lodge or a modest tower house with an enclosure. It is also possible that the house was burned out and ruined after Culloden. The steading buildings at Inverharroch may yet hide some early secrets!
