Blackwater Lodge

Blackwater Lodge sits on the southern western edge of the Cabrach. It was built in the late 1700s as a hunting lodge for Alexander, 4th Duke of Gordon. Clan Gordon were one of Scotland’s most powerful and influential families whose estates stretched from the Moray Firth to Ben Nevis and across the Cabrach. The 4th Duke gained the nickname ‘Cock o’ the North’ for his lavish receptions at Gordon Castle in Fochabers which he had remodelled into a grand baronial mansion.

Blackwater Lodge

Blackwater Lodge now lies empty and derelict along with the stables, kennels and other outbuildings. The route to Blackwater Lodge is one of the waymarked trails in the Cabrach supported by the Doronell Ranger Service and Visitor Centre. The trail starts and ends at the Visitor Centre next to the Grouse Inn at Ardwell. The track passes alongside Upper Ardwell and there is a good view of the empty farms at Tomnavoun and Shenval across the valley of the River Blackwater.

Blackwater Lodge was used by the Gordon family for summer shooting expeditions. Queen Victoria visited in 1867 on one of her many trips from the royal family’s hunting lodge at Balmoral.

Michael Kidd lived and worked as a teacher at Blairmore School in the 1960s and 1970s. He spent his free time  exploring the old drove roads and paths across the Cabrach. Listen to him read from his diaries about a walk he took in 1976 from Shenval to Blackwater and his meeting with farmer Peter Law.
