Broomknowes

Broomknowes is known as ‘The Bink’

The farm of Broomknowes was originally one of the tenanted holdings of Badchier but by 1824, estate rent rolls show it as a distinct and separate farm. Broomknowes was known locally as ‘The Bink’, from the Scots meaning ‘a bench or shelf’. Family legend has it that the name came from the hospitality given to visitors and a welcome seat beside the fireplace. The McConachie family are most closely associated with Broomknowes. Peter McConachie was known as ‘Auld Bink’ and his father was called ‘Jock o’ the Bink’. The family have connections across the Cabrach including at Ardwell. Peter’s mother Annie Gow Smith was a descendent of the legendary fiddler Neil Gow.

Broomknowes

The McConachie family farmed at Broomknowes for generations. Peter McConachie and his wife Mary raised thirteen children at Broomknowes and nine of them eventually emigrated to Canada or the United States. Peter and Mary were the last people to farm Broomknowes and left the croft in the early 1920s, retiring to live with their daughter in Keith.

These photographs come from the family archive gathered by Alan McConachie in 1998 and generously shared with the Cabrach Trust by Sheila Wiseman.
