The Cabrach Picnic and Games 2026: A Tradition Rekindled

There is something special about summer in the Cabrach. The long days, the rolling hills, the sound of laughter carried on the breeze—and, once again, the return of one of the area’s most cherished traditions.

On Sunday 26th July 2026, The Cabrach Trust is delighted to welcome visitors from near and far to the Cabrach Picnic and Games, a celebration of community, heritage, and fun that has been bringing people together for almost 150 years.

A Celebration Rooted in History

The story of the Cabrach Picnic began in 1877 as a summer gathering connected to the local school. What started as a modest celebration quickly grew into one of the most anticipated events in the region. Each year, hundreds—and sometimes as many as a thousand—people travelled from across the Cabrach and neighbouring communities including Dufftown, Glass, and Rhynie to spend a day together on the banks of the River Deveron.

Held on the famous Picnic Haugh, the event became renowned for its Highland sports, music, dancing, races, and friendly competition. Families gathered with picnic baskets, neighbours reconnected, and visitors experienced the warmth and hospitality that the Cabrach has long been known for.

Among the highlights was the legendary hill race above Dalriach Farm—a demanding test of endurance and determination that inspired fierce but good-natured rivalry between the Upper and Lower Cabrach.

As the population of the area declined during the early twentieth century, the annual gathering became increasingly difficult to sustain. The final traditional picnic took place in 1935, but the memories and stories remained alive within the community for generations.

Bringing the Tradition Back to Life

In 2022, The Cabrach Trust proudly revived the Cabrach Picnic and Games, breathing new life into a much-loved local tradition. Since then, it has once again become a highlight of the summer calendar, bringing together residents, families, former locals, and visitors to celebrate everything that makes the Cabrach unique.

This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever.

We are thrilled to welcome back the ever-popular Huntly Pipe Band, whose stirring music will fill the air throughout the day, alongside performances from the Alison Gordon School of Dance, bringing colour, energy, and excitement to the celebrations.

The much-loved Cabrach Rose Bowl Competition will return, giving athletes and competitors the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of generations past. From races and games to family-friendly challenges and prizes, there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved, cheer on participants, and enjoy a little healthy competition.

Food, Friends and Festivities

No picnic would be complete without good food, and this year’s event has plenty to tempt visitors. Enjoy a delicious picnic from The Acorn, prepared and served by Forest Catering, grab a freshly brewed coffee from Lettoch Farm, or tuck into a traditional hog roast while enjoying the entertainment.
