Cabrach Picnic and Games: A Tradition Rekindled
There’s a buzz building in the glen as we prepare to welcome you back to the much-loved Cabrach Picnic and Games on Sunday 27th July 2025. Whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor, this special day offers something for everyone – music from Huntly Pipe Band, dancing with Alison Gordon School of Dance, food, community spirit, and a strong sense of history.
As we get ready for the 2025 Cabrach Picnic & Games, take a look back at our highlights short film from last year.
The Cabrach Picnic was first held in 1877, born as a local school summer celebration. Over time, it grew into one of the biggest annual social gatherings in the area, drawing hundreds – and sometimes up to a thousand – people from the Cabrach and surrounding parishes like Dufftown, Glass, and Rhynie. Held on the ‘Picnic Haugh’ beside the River Deveron, the day was filled with Highland sports, music, dancing, laughter, and shared meals. Families would gather, athletes would compete, and neighbours – old and new – would reunite.
The highlight? The legendary hill race, a true test of stamina and spirit, running up the slopes above Dalriach Farm. It was a celebration of both strength and community – with friendly rivalry between the Upper and Lower Cabrach always adding to the fun.
Sadly, as the local population dwindled, so too did the gatherings. The last traditional picnic was held in 1935 – but the memory lived on.
Fast forward to 2022, when The Cabrach Trust brought the Picnic back to life. Now firmly re-established as an annual highlight, the games combine modern fun with a deep respect for heritage. And this year promises to be our best yet.
We’re thrilled to welcome back the Huntly Pipe Band and the Alison Gordon School of Dance, who’ll bring energy and colour to the day. Our popular Cabrach Rose Bowl competition returns, inviting athletes to follow in the footsteps of the champions of the past. There’ll be races, games, and prizes – just like in the old days – with something for all ages.
Feeling peckish? Grab one of our community picnic boxes, or enjoy fresh coffee from Lettoch Farm and wood-fired delights from Fired Up Pizza. Whether you’re here for the music, the games, the food or the craic – this is a day to make memories.
So bring your friends, your family, and your stories – and help us continue a tradition that has brought joy to the Cabrach for nearly 150 years.
