Event Details

Explore this fascinating medium with award winning illustrator, Steve Carroll.

In a few simple steps, you will be shown how to create striking images of your pet or favourite animal.

Date:

4th March 2023

10am – 1pm

Course Description:

Scraperboard is a way to create an image using a special board with a surface layer of black ink and an under layer of white China clay. Using a sharp metal tool, you engrave the black to reveal the white layer below. By making repeated lines, marks and strokes, the image will emerge dramatically from the dark background.

Because you can draw with a fine line, scraperboard is particularly suitable for depicting fur, hair and feathers. With this in mind, please bring with you good quality 6”x 4” photo prints (no digital images) of your favourite pet or pictures of animals in a book. Steve will teach you how to trace your image and transfer the outline to the scraperboard surface. Then, by using the metal tool, he will demonstrate different ways of creating textures and tones. You will be encouraged to experiment to get a feel of the engraving action, before bringing your very own works of art to life.

Participant Requirements:

Please bring with you good quality 6”x 4” photo prints (no digital images) of your favourite pet or pictures of animals in a book.

No experience needed.

Scraperboard and tools will be provided.

** Reduced cost for community members (Cabrach, Dufftown, Rhynie, Lumsden, Glass)

The Cabrach Winter Festival: A Season of Creativity and Connection
