Event Details

Join us for an evening family event on the Cabrach Discovery Trail where you will be immersed in a Dark Sky experience, use specialist equipment and be guided by sky at night experts from Tomintoul & Glenlivet Development Trust and the Cairngorms Astronomy Group.

The Cabrach is one of the top thirty most remote zones in Scotland. It occupies an area of ten miles wide by eight miles long consisting of wild mountainous terrain and spectacular scenery. It is an area of great natural beauty with unspoilt views over mountains and skies.  The Cabrach is nominated by Sigma as a Dark Sky Site with Milky Way status.

After a warming pot of Stovies in the restored old Smiddy, our Dark Sky expert, Lydia Fisher, Glenlivet and Inveraven Heritage will guide us along the Discovery Trail to the nature hide where we will star gaze and learn about the night sky above.  As we make our way along the Dorenell Ranger Service will be on hand to help us to identify nocturnal life on the trails using detection equipment and special lighting.  We will then head back to the Smiddy for a warm by the firepit and a pot of Stovies.

Clothing and footwear adequate for the evening weather will be required, although the indoor space will be warm we can not guarantee the weather outdoors, please be prepared.

Hot drinks and stovies will be provided, we are unable to cater for any special dietary requirements but you are welcome to bring food that you may want to eat.
